Interpretation and Translation Support Services
African Baptist Ministries (ABM) – Bridging Language Barriers for Community Empowerment
The African Baptist Ministries (ABM) is a registered non-profit organization, committed to empowering newcomers and underrepresented communities by providing essential support services. Among the various initiatives, our Free Interpretation and Translation Services for Newcomers Project stands out as a critical resource for overcoming language barriers and ensuring equitable access to necessary services such as healthcare, legal assistance, and social services.
At ABM, we recognize that newcomers to Canada, particularly those settling in Edmonton, face unique challenges when it comes to language. According to recent data, 30-35% of immigrants in Edmonton struggle with English proficiency. These barriers not only hinder their ability to access essential services but also affect their employment prospects and overall integration into the community. In response, ABM has developed a comprehensive program that provides free interpretation and translation services in several languages commonly spoken by Edmonton’s immigrant communities, including Swahili, Lingala, Luganda, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Somali, Arabic, and Ukrainian. Additionally, we offer sign language interpretation to support individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
What We Offer:
- Language Interpretation and Translation: Services are provided over the phone, via virtual platforms, or in-person appointments, based on the client’s preferences and needs.
- Sign Language Services: With video remote interpreting (VRI) and in-person options, ABM is committed to providing accessible communication for the deaf and hard of hearing communities.
- Volunteer Engagement: We collaborate with Edmonton’s immigrant communities to recruit and train volunteers proficient in various languages to offer quality interpretation and translation services.
- Outreach and Partnerships: We work closely with other organizations serving immigrant and refugee populations, extending our reach and fostering stronger community ties.
Contribution to Health and Wellbeing:
ABM’s Interpretation and Translation Services directly contribute to the health and wellbeing of Edmonton’s newcomers by ensuring they can communicate effectively in critical areas like healthcare. Without proper interpretation, many individuals face difficulties in understanding medical advice, leading to poorer health outcomes. Our services ensure that language is not a barrier to receiving timely and appropriate healthcare, enhancing the overall quality of life for newcomers and individuals with disabilities. Additionally, by fostering communication with social services, educational institutions, and legal entities, we help reduce isolation and empower individuals to participate fully in the community.
Key Goals of the Project:
- Service Delivery: Establish and maintain free interpretation and translation services, staffed by trained volunteers.
- Training and Development: Provide cultural competency training to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Outreach and Awareness: Promote the project within immigrant communities and among service providers.
- Technology and Resources: Invest in technology such as video conferencing tools to enable remote interpretation.
- Partnership Development: Build partnerships with local organizations for integrated support.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Track project effectiveness and make continuous improvements.
By addressing the language barriers that prevent newcomers from accessing essential services, ABM is creating a welcoming, inclusive community where individuals can thrive and build new lives in Edmonton.
